Your guide to Castle Cary living

Your guide to living in Castle Cary: what to expect when you move to Somerset’s best-kept secret

If you’ve been searching for a place that offers genuine countryside living without sacrificing convenience, Castle Cary keeps coming up for good reason. Nestled between the Mendip Hills and Blackmore Vale, this Somerset market town has the kind of warm, golden-stone charm that makes people stop mid-viewing and say “actually, I could live here.”

Here’s what life in Castle Cary really looks like, and what it could be like living at our newest development, The Carriages.

A town that works for everyday life

Castle Cary isn’t a village that requires driving twenty minutes for a pint of milk. The high street is within three minutes of The Carriages, and it punches well above its weight for a town of its size. You’ll find independent shops, a Co-op and Morrisons Daily for day-to-day essentials, Boots, a community library, and two much-loved pubs in The George Hotel and The White Hart.

The Market House, a local landmark dating from 1855, still hosts its Tuesday market, a tradition stretching back to medieval times.

For families, there are three schools within easy reach: Toy Box Preschool, Castle Cary Primary School, and Ansford Academy for secondary. Milbrook Surgery covers healthcare. Fairfield and the pump track give children (and active adults) room to roam.

Getting out and about

From your doorstep, you’re on the edge of real countryside. The Monarch’s Way long-distance footpath, which traces the escape route of King Charles II in 1651, passes through, and the Somerset Levels, Mendip Hills, Stourhead and Longleat are all within easy reach. The development itself has been designed with biodiversity in mind, with green spaces, wetland areas, an orchard, ecology corridors, and bird and bat boxes throughout.

For something a little more indulgent, The Newt in Somerset is just minutes away, one of the country’s most celebrated garden estates, with woodland walks and farm-to-table dining that people travel from London and across the South West specifically to visit.

The commuter question

This is where Castle Cary genuinely surprises people. The station, just a mile from The Carriages, sits on the main London Paddington line, with a journey time of around one hour forty minutes. Bristol Temple Meads is just over an hour by rail. Bath Spa is under an hour. Taunton is twenty-one minutes.

If you drive, the A303 via the A371 connects you quickly to London and the wider motorway network, while Bristol Airport is under an hour by car. For hybrid workers who need flexibility rather than a daily commute, this location is genuinely hard to beat.

The homes themselves

The Carriages is a collection of 29 individually designed 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedroom homes, built using energy-efficient timber frame construction with a specification that goes well beyond the basics. Every home comes with an air source heat pump, EV charger, full fibre broadband connection, and insulation that exceeds building regulations. The larger homes (Ashbury, Banbury, Malmesbury and Nailsworth) include individually designed Omega kitchens, sliding wardrobes to bedroom one, and studies fitted out for home working.

The development includes the Ansford ‘First Homes’ plots for buyers taking their first step, right up to the five-bedroom Nailsworth with just under 1,900 sq ft of space. Buyers who reserve early can personalise kitchen finishes, tiling and other details, and all homes come with a 10-year NHBC or LABC warranty.
